The selection of pipes is crucial in the industrial and construction fields. Among them, seamless pipes and stainless steel welded pipes are two common types of pipes. They each have their own characteristics and are suitable for different application scenarios. This article will provide a detailed analysis of the differences between seamless pipes and stainless steel welded pipes, helping you make informed decisions when choosing pipe materials.

1. Manufacturing process

Seamless pipe: Seamless pipe is made by piercing or hot rolling or cold drawing a whole piece of metal, without the need for welding. This manufacturing process ensures that seamless pipes have no seams along their entire length, providing higher structural integrity and strength.

Stainless steel welded pipe: Stainless steel welded pipe is formed by curling stainless steel sheet into a tube shape and connecting it through welding process. The manufacturing process of welded pipes is relatively simple and has high production efficiency, but due to the presence of welds, their structural integrity and compressive strength are relatively low.

2. Strength and pressure resistance

Seamless pipe: Due to the absence of welds, seamless pipes have higher compressive strength and corrosion resistance. They can withstand higher pressures and are widely used in high-pressure equipment, boilers, and heat exchangers.

Stainless steel welded pipe: Welded pipes have relatively low compressive strength and are mainly used in medium and low pressure transmission pipelines, such as water supply, gas supply, and heating systems. Although it has good corrosion resistance, it may not be as safe and reliable as seamless pipes when used in high-pressure environments.

3. Application scenarios

Seamless pipe: Seamless pipes are widely used in high-pressure and high-temperature environments such as petroleum, natural gas, chemical, power, and boilers. Its seamless structure ensures safety and reliability under harsh conditions.

Stainless steel welded pipe: Welded pipes are mainly used in the fields of construction, decoration, furniture manufacturing, and general industrial transportation. They are commonly used for transporting liquids and gases, especially performing well in low and medium pressure environments.

4. Cost and Economy

Seamless pipe: The manufacturing process of seamless pipe is complex and the production cost is high. Therefore, its market price is usually higher than that of welded pipes.

Stainless steel welded pipe: The production cost of welded pipe is relatively low, the manufacturing process is relatively simple, and the price is also relatively cheap. Therefore, in some scenarios where the requirements for pipe strength and pressure resistance are not high, welded pipes are more economical.

5. Quality and Testing

Seamless pipe: Seamless pipes require strict quality testing during the production process, including ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing, and X-ray testing, to ensure that their internal structure is defect free.

Stainless steel welded pipe: The inspection of welded pipes mainly focuses on the weld area, and commonly used inspection methods include ultrasonic testing and X-ray testing. Although the weld seam is its weak link, strict quality control can ensure its safety during use.

Seamless pipes and stainless steel welded pipes each have their own advantages and disadvantages, and are suitable for different application scenarios. When selecting pipes, specific requirements such as working pressure, usage environment, and budget should be considered comprehensively. If high-strength and high pressure resistant pipes are needed, seamless pipes are the primary choice; In some scenarios where strength requirements are not high and budget is limited, stainless steel welded pipes are an economical choice.
